Windows are exposed to the same kind of wear and tear that your roof and siding are. This means you have to give your windows the same care and attention when inspecting your home for storm damage. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Glam Roofing & Contracting, LLC shares a quick guide on how to inspect your windows after a summer storm.
Document the damage. If you have storm-damaged windows, don’t try to clean anything up just yet. Your insurance provider will need documentation that the windows were indeed damaged during the storm. If you need to move broken glass or debris so your family can move about the house safely, take pictures and video of the damage.
Filming yourself while clearing away debris may sound ridiculous at first, but it can help support your insurance claim. It will also aid your home and roof repair contractor with their insurance claim documentation.
Inspect the windows. Take your smartphone or digital camera, then go around the house and inspect each window, keeping an eye out for signs of the following types of damage:
- Wind damage — Wind during a storm can be strong enough to cause damage to windows. Keep an eye out for stress cracks, especially where the glass meets the sash. Window hardware can also be damaged, so test the windows for loose locks and hinges.
- Impact damage — High winds can pick up stones and other small objects and hurl them against the windows. Small pieces may be too small to shatter the glass, but they can still cause cracks and scratches.
- Water infiltration — Rainwater can be pushed by the wind through weatherstripping and the gaps between frames and sashes. Watch out for water stains that appear in these areas.
After the Inspection
Ideally, you should document damage on your windows (as well as other parts of the house) while a representative of your insurance provider and your repair or restoration contractor are on their way. If your windows are still under warranty, find the paperwork, as it may be required.
