No matter how durable your roof is, it’s bound to suffer some form of damage after a storm. That’s why as soon as the storm passes, you should have a roofing contractor inspect your home. What are the steps you should take?
Document Roof Damage
Once the weather clears, take pictures of roof damage. Before you can file a claim with your insurer, you’ll need to submit proof that the damage was caused by extreme weather and isn’t due to improper maintenance or any negligence on your part.
Where Should You Start Looking?
Front lawn and backyard – Storm winds might have dislodged shingles that may have ended up on your front lawn or in your backyard.
Roof – Debris being carried by strong winds may have landed on and dented your roof.
Chimneys, skylights and vents – Flashing is a thin piece of metal used to cover roof joints, or the areas where the roof surface meest other parts of your roof, such as the chimney, skylights and vents.
Attic and ceiling – If water managed to infiltrate your roof’s underlayment, the first signs of moisture damage should start appearing in your attic. Make sure to keep an eye out for ceiling water stains in the lower levels of your home as well. Keep in mind that water follows the path of least resistance. As such, the location of the water stains might not be where the actual source of the leak is located.
Schedule a Roof Repair or Replacement
What if there’s no need to look for signs of damage, given that the storm left a hole in the middle of your ceiling? Naturally, emergency roof repair is needed in this case. However, don’t attempt to fix it yourself—doing so will lower your payout, not to mention you might accidentally get hurt while attempting repairs. Cover the hole with a tarp instead. It’s best to leave roof repairs to reputable professionals.
