When installing drywall in your home, the finish you choose is just as crucial as the final look. However, many elements impact whether your wall finish will be attractive. To achieve the best drywall, the installer must be qualified and knowledgeable. This will help prevent some of these frequent drywall installation problems.
However, both installers and roofing companies can have misunderstandings and make common errors when installing drywall. We address them in this article.
Mistake #1: Not Cutting Tapered Edges
Leave a space on the edges to ensure the drywall is tapered correctly. Failure to do so will result in inside drywall chipping or disintegrating. In such cases, you must remove the drywall and reinstall it. Instead of tapering edges, fill the space to prevent having to replace the entire sheet.
Mistake #2: Forgetting to Fit Before Fastening
First, make sure everything fits. Then, before screwing the drywall in place, make sure it fits snugly before securing it. Cut off any excess and install it tightly to the edges with a utility knife. The drywall should then slip over the outlet box and be easy to fasten.
Mistake #3: Too Many Joints When Installing Drywall
Taping drywall is already time-consuming enough without having to add more joints. If at all possible, use the largest and longest drywall sheet available. It’s preferable to have too much than not enough. A roofer suggests always keeping 54″ wide drywall sheets on hand for your basic room installation to eliminate the extra horizontal joint.
Mistake #4: Guessing Your Framing Locations
Before you cover the framing with drywall, be sure to mark it. Otherwise you’ll have difficulty correctly installing the screws. Making marks and using them as a guideline as you pencil a line across is very helpful. You should be able to screw in the screws quickly and accurately in this manner.
Mistake #5: Edge Support for Drywall Installation Is Missing
Examine the framing before installing drywall. At each corner, one inch of framing should be visible. Always examine the drywall parallel to the ceiling framing. This is sometimes forgotten. If a hammer won’t fit, add blocking by screwing it in at an angle.
