A deck installation project is one of the best ways to expand your living space. In order to maximize this home addition, your local roofer and home improvement expert state that it should be built with safety as the top priority. In this post, Glam Roofing & Contracting, LLC, a top deck builder, shares the importance of building safe decking around your house.
Secure permits. You should get a permit before you build your deck. We highly recommend preparing for at least a month before beginning the project. To get approval, you have to ensure that your decking plan meets the minimum requirements in terms of the size, location and materials to be used for the construction before submitting it to your building authority or HOA.
Secure deck foundations. Having a solid foundation is key to building a safe deck. To ensure that it remains firm and durable, your deck and roofing company will tell you that the pier system should have deep holes in which to secure the posts. If the holes are too shallow, the posts won’t be able to handle the weight of the deck applied to them, along with the flooring. Make sure that the bases of the support posts are secured by galvanized plates before anchoring them to the pier with concrete to prevent rotting.
Railing. If your deck is situated more than 30 inches above the ground, you’ll need a sturdy railing to keep those on the deck safe. The minimum deck height is around 36 inches, with the vertical posts beneath the handrail spaced less than four inches apart per section. It should be able to handle 200 pounds of force with ease anywhere on the rail.
